Fernando Vargas defeats Quartey. Sends a message to Trinidad!

Ferocious Fernando Vargas (19-0, 17 knockouts) was exactly what his nickname indicates on Saturday, 4/15, when he was the stronger, bigger puncher as he belted Ike Quartey to his second defeat in his solid 12-year pro career.

There were no knockdowns in the fight, which was fought at a furious pace as Vargas tried to get inside Quartey's jab and turn the bout into a brawl. Vargas often threw twice as many punches than Quartey in a round, especially late in each round when the fighters often went toe-to-toe as the bell sounded.

Judges Dave Moretti and Jerry Roth had Vargas winning 116-111, and Glen Hamada had him ahead 114-113.

It was the second straight decision loss for Quartey, the former welterweight champion who dropped a split decision to Oscar De La Hoya when the two met 14 months ago.

Vargas, who has fought in De La Hoya's shadow, said the win in only his 19th pro fight proved that he was better than De La Hoya.

"My fight wasn't close with Quartey and De La Hoya's was," Vargas said. "I think I proved something."

"I beat one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world convincingly," said Vargas. "Now, I hope, people will start giving me credit as one of the best fighters in the world."

When asked, Vargas said he wants Trinidad this year and if it happens, Vargas doesn't plan to run as De La Hoya did in a controversial loss.

"This Mexican isn't going to run around the ring the entire fight like De La Hoya did. I want to show you how a real Mexican fights and that I'm a real warrior." He continues, "Tito (Trinidad), you're a great fighter, I know you want to unify the titles, lets do it." Gary Shaw the promoter of Vargas said, "Were ready for negotiations"
