Career Highlights
- Won 20 or more games four times.
- Struck out 2,416 batters during his 19 year career.
- Was inducted into the Boston Red Sox Hall of Fame in 1997
- Led the American League in shutouts three times (1966, 68, 74).
- Won two games in the 1975 World Series, one of the greatest World Series in the history of baseball, against the Big Red Machine, one of the greatest teams in history. Tiant shutout the Reds in one game and started all three games won by the underdog Red Sox in that memorable Fall Classic.
- Is tied for the all-time record for most strikeouts in two consecutive games (32 in 1968) with Nolan Ryan (1974), Dwight Gooden (1984) and Randy Johnson (1997).
- Holds the all-time record for lowest opponents' batting average in a single season (.168 in 1968).
- Had 49 career shutouts, which rank him in a tie for 21st on the all-time shutout list. Of the 22 pitchers in the history of baseball that have thrown as many or more shutouts, 20 are in the Hall of Fame. The only two that are not in are Don Sutton and Bert Blyleven. Sutton received 346 of 355 needed votes in the 1997 voting and appears destined for election. There are at least 14 pitchers in the Hall of Fame with fewer career shutouts than Tiant.
- Won 10 or more games 13 times.
- Hurled 187 complete games.
- Pitched in three All-Star Games ('68, '74 and '76) and started the 1968 All-Star Game.
- Defeated Whitey Ford in his major league debut at Yankee Stadium in 1964 by shutting out the four-time defending American League champion Yankees 3-0, while striking out 11 and scattering four hits.
- Won Comeback Player of the Year Award in 1972.
- Had six seasons with sub-3.00 ERA.
- Struck out 19 Minnesota Twins in a 10-inning game in 1968.
- His 1.68 ERA in 1968 was the lowest in the American League since Walter Johnson's 1.49 in 1919.
- His 1.91 ERA in 1972 was the first sub-2.00 ERA for a Boston Red Sox pitcher since Carl Mays in 1917. Only Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez has been able to achieve a sub-2.00 ERA at Fenway since Tiant did it.
- Second all-time to Nolan Ryan, for fewest hits allowed per-game in one season (5.3 hits per game in 1968).
