Written by Ozzie Gonzalez December 3, 2000 -- After a grueling fight with the hard-hitting Felix Trinidad, Fernando Vargas did not attend the post-fight press conference because he was taken to a local hospital for pre-cautionary measures.
In a concession speech, Gary Shaw acknowledged that "Trinidad is a great fighter and should be considered as the best pound-for-pound in boxing." Shaw also mentioned that "Vargas was very upset about the loss, but he will be back and he will make you proud." Vargas who fought a great fight and gave Trinidad all he could handle for nearly twelve rounds, fell to the better man that evening and that was expressed at the press conference. Vargas previously had said that the only way he would get beaten is by getting knocked out and that was exactly what happened. Nevertheless, Vargas' performance is worthy of a rematch and Vargas' co-manager Rolando Arrellano expressed that at the press conference. "I'm looking forward to a rematch and I hope the Trinidad camp feels the same way." Afterwards, the colorful Don King praised the performance of Trinidad and made no mention of a rematch with Vargas. King did express that Trinidad and dad, Don Felix have a game plan to move up in weight to fight the WBA Middleweight champion, William Joppy (32-1 23 KOs), then a possible showdown with the un-disputed light heavyweight champion Roy Jones Jr. (Listen to Don King call for Roy Jones Jr.).
