Felix "Tito" Trinidad signs contract to fight Fernando Vargas

September 20, 2000 -- Puerto Rican super welterweight champion, Felix "Tito" Trinidad took the first step in a unification match by signing a contract to fight the IBF champion Fernando Vargas.

Vargas has not signed the contract yet, but the Trinidad camp feels confident that the match will go on and expect it to take place on December 2nd or 9th in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Nevertheless, Don Felix Trinidad Sr., Felix's father and trainer has given Vargas an ultimatum to sign the contract. "We are waiting for Vargas. We think he just realized that the Tito fight is a reality and he was only making the challenge to get promotion for himself. Now that we have signed the fight, he hasn't. We will wait only until the end of September, if he doesn't want to fight we will move on. We have answered his challenge. It's time for Vargas to sign. He wanted us, he will have us." said Don Felix.

Felix Trinidad said that he will continue to train as if the fight will go on with Vargas because as he said "I want to prove that I'm the best at 154 pounds and it's a match the world wants to see."

Lawyers representing Fernando Vargas have been contacted and will be in contract negotiations with Don Felix and promoter Don King this week in New York.

In the rare chance that the fight will not go on, there was mention of Tito elevating to middleweight to challenge William Joppy in December.

Fernando Vargas responded to the Trinidad camp today by saying  "Not only do I want the fight with Trinidad, I'm already in camp training for it." He said "Trinidad's father is going to find out what Fernando Vargas is all about in December. "
