Trinidad snubs De La Hoya,
next fight will be against Reid.
Current WBC and IBF welterweight champion Felix Trinidad, (36-0 30 KO's) who won a controversial fight against Oscar De La Hoya, decided not to grant De La Hoya an immediate rematch and moved up in weight class to fight David Reid.
Reid, a former Olympic gold medallist and current WBA super welterweight champion will meet his toughest match when he encounters the hard-hitting Trinidad. "I will be the next super welterweight champion on March 3rd", said a confident Trinidad.
Clearly a big step for Trinidad who never fought at 154 pounds and will be matched up against bigger, stronger fighters. Reid who is undefeated at 14-0, has often looked lethargic and unfocused against his opponent. Therefore, this match could be pivotal for the career of Reid. "This is the biggest fight in my career. I live for these types of fights, it's going to be big, its going to be special" said Reid.
Meanwhile, the De La Hoya camp is furious that Trinidad pulled out of talks for a rematch to move up to 154 pounds to fight Reid. They have now decided that Oscar De La Hoya will try and regain a portion of the 147-pound title in his next fight, promoter Bob Arum said. That will come against Derell Coley for his WBC title because according to World Boxing Council rules, Trinidad will be forced to give up the WBC welterweight title he won from De La Hoya in a September fight in order to challenge for Reid's super-welterweight crown at 154 pounds. Arum said De La Hoya's fight will be on Feb. 26th at Madison Square Garden. Arum had been in negotiations with rival promoter Don King for a rematch of the Sept. 18th fight and will continue talks.
In the Trinidad vs Reid match, the co-featured main event will feature six-time world champion Julio Cesar Chavez, (103-4-2, 86 KOs), of Culiacan, Mexico. Chavez will continue his quest for another world title when he takes on an opponent to be announced later.
