Garcia blew into the Players Championship in March and shot 82 in the opening round, fired Fanny Sunesson (his caddie) and has continued to struggled in his second year of pro golf. Garcia, who's father is his swing coach, has been working on his game after his second missed cut in four PGA Tour events this season. After that magical 1999 rookie season, Garcia has yet to recapture that magic which resulted in two European Tour victories, four top-10s on the PGA Tour (including a captivating third-place finish at Medinah) and an electrifying performance in the Ryder Cup. Fellow golfers are saying, Garcia needs a new team and an instructor and who could also be a big brother. As one well-respected tour regular said, "He's got to get rid of that entourage and start doing things on his own." That may be too much to ask of a fragile 20-year-old fighting the cultural differences of a foreign country who is often being compared to Tiger Woods, his American counterpart. Sunesson was the second major championship caddie Garcia has terminated. Sunesson ended the relationship with Faldo so she could hook up with Garcia. At the time, it appeared to be the beginning of a beautiful professional marriage, but the so-called marriage has soured and ended. This year, he played nine brilliant holes in the WGC-Andersen Consulting Match Play, dusting Mike Weir, 7 and 6. He lost his next match to David Duval, then tied for 42nd at Bay Hill. At the Players he played 23 holes in seven under—and the remaining 13 holes in 17 over. "Sergio has time," said fellow golfer Mark O'Meara. "He might go through growing pains, but when he finds that something is wrong, I think he's smart enough to figure it out." Remember this: Woods went through tough times and personnel changes in his second year. Look at Tiger Woods now, Garcia will rebound.
