Pedro
Martinez wins his second straight Cy Young Award!
November
13, 2000 -- Pedro Martinez once again proves that he is the
best pitcher in baseball. On Monday, Martinez won the A.L Cy Young
award for the second straight year, third overall, and became the first pitcher to win the
prestigious award unanimously in two consecutive years.
Martinez, received 28 votes for 140 points in voting released Monday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Oakland's Tim Hudson finished second with 54 points, getting 16 seconds and six thirds. David Wells of
Toronto was third with 46 points, followed by Andy Pettitte of the Yankees (7) and Detroit's Todd Jones (3).
The Dominican born, Martinez went 23-4 with a 2.07 ERA in a modern era
where pitching in the Major Leagues is considered paper thin. Despite the
great pitching, Martinez supplied for Boston, the Red Sox went 85-77 and finished
2 1/2 games
behind the New York Yankees in the AL East.
He joins Gaylord Perry and Randy Johnson as the only pitchers to win the honor in
each league as Martinez won it in 1997 for Montreal.
Martinez earned a $500,000 bonus on top of his $11 million salary for winning the award.
