Martinez, Guerrero get "Player of the Month" awards. 

Two Dominican natives got awards for their great play on the field for the month of April. Boston Red Sox's ace pitcher Pedro Martinez and right fielder Vladimir Guerrero of the Montreal Expos.

Pedro Martinez who won four of six monthly pitching awards last year, was 5-0 with a 1.27 earned run average and 50 strikeouts in 35.1 innings pitched. He will receive the American League "Pitcher of the Month" award for his great performance in April.

Martinez will receive a specially designed and engraved trophy from the T.R. Miller Company.



In the National League, Vladimir Guerrero got off to a scorching start, batting a league-high .410 (34-for-83) for the month with eight home runs, 27 RBI and 16 runs scored. He had four doubles and posted a .795 slugging percentage and .495 on-base percentage. 

Guerrero tied the club mark for most RBI in the month of April (Henry Rodriguez, 1996). On the season, Guerrero currently ranks first in the National League in hitting (.391), second in RBI (28), third in total bases (68) and third in on-base percentage (.477).

Guerrero will receive an engraved Diamond Award for being voted as National League Player of the Month.

"The Big Cat" Andres Galarraga of the Braves, who tied for the league lead in home runs with 10, finished second in the Player of the Month balloting in the National League.
