De La Hoya hires Floyd Mayweather Sr. as his new trainer October
18, 2000 -- Former welterweight champion Oscar De La Hoya,
has decided not to go with his former trainer Emanuel Steward and decides
to hire Floyd Mayweather Sr. as his new trainer.
Floyd Mayweather Sr., a former welterweight who fought for 16 years, will
replace Roberto Alcazar as trainer, and Joe Souza will replace Chuck Bodak
as cut man.
De La Hoya, who chose Jerry Perenchio as his new promoter, has lost two of
his last three fights, to Felix Trinidad and Shane Mosley, but said he
wasn't placing blame.
''I take full responsibility for those fights,'' De La Hoya said Tuesday.
''I am confident, however, that these changes will help make Team De La
Hoya stronger than ever.
''I plan to re-enter the ring soon, and I promise all of my fans and
supporters that they will not be disappointed.''
About Alcazar, De La Hoya said: ''I am extremely grateful to Roberto for
his valuable contributions over the last 10 years. Although our
trainer-boxer relationship has come to an end, our friendship will
definitely continue. I wish Roberto the very best in future endeavors,
which may include a new role within Team De La Hoya.''
Mayweather has been the manager-trainer of his son, Floyd Jr., the WBC
super featherweight champion. But the two split when the younger
Mayweather turned over the managerial reins to rap producer James Prince.
