The Roberto Clemente Award is named after the Pittsburgh Pirates' Hall of Fame baseball player, the great Roberto Clemente, who died in a 1972 plane crash during a mission to deliver relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

It is given annually to the player who best exemplifies the game of baseball both on and off the field and who personifies the humanitarian ideals championed by Clemente. Consideration is given to sportsmanship, community involvement and an individual's contribution to his team and baseball.

The Roberto Clemente Award is Major League Baseball's highest honor for outstanding service to the community.

A panel of baseball dignitaries, including Vera Clemente, widow of Roberto Clemente, selects the annual Roberto Clemente Award.
