March 19, 2000 -- Hall of Fame boxer "El Radar" Wilfred Benitez, 42, was released from Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx after suffering epileptic attacks that paralyzed his movement in the right side of his body and left him with speech difficulties.

Benitez smiled with emotion upon his released from the hospital after an 18 days stay.  He quickly returned back to his homeland of Puerto Rico where he will continue his medical treatment.  In a TWA airplane he arrived at the Luis Muņoz Marin International airport in Isla Verde, P.R.

Accompanied by his mother Doņa Clara and a nurse provided by the medical authorities of New York, he was taken in a wheel chair to the runway of the airport where a helicopter of Aeromed, an aerial ambulance, was waiting to transport him to the "Antigua Casa de Salud", Trauma Center, in Rio Piedras.  Benitez who currently resides in the town of Saint Just de Carolina will be admitted to the Trauma Center for an indefinite length of time.  In the Trauma Center he will be under special care and observation, will be given therapy and undergo all kinds of studies including neurology.

Benitez will need a lot of help, support and medical attention. The support of WBA super welterweight boxing champion, Felix "Tito" Trinidad is expected, including a visit to the hospital along with his father and manager Don Felix Trinidad Rodriguez.

Benitez has made gradual improvement and is back on his feet despite his current state of health.  His movements are slow and his speech is slurred, unlike the swiftness that earned him the nickname " El Radar" in his days of glory as a three time world boxing champ.

Three times world champion Wilfred Benitez retired with 53 wins, 8 losses,1 draw with 31 knockouts.
