Feb. 26, 2000 -- Puerto Rican, Hall of Fame boxer "El Radar" Wilfred Benitez, 42, who gave us many exciting and memorable boxing matches in the 80's is in stable condition, after battling with epileptic seizures which landed him in the hospital. Admitted in the intensive care unit in Jacobi Hospital in the Bronx, Benitez is showing improvement within his stable condition. He is alert and is recovering movement in the right side of his body after an epileptic attack which paralyzed his right side and left him with speech difficulties. Ponce Laspina , director of the sports program at Betances Community Center in the Bronx who accompany Benitez to the Angel Manfredy vs. Sean Fletcher fight last Friday in Atlantic City, stated that Benitez recognizes people and though he still has difficulty speaking he appears alert. Benitez has been suffering from periodic epileptic episodes for several recent years but had not had a major attack since 1996. Benitez arrived to New York to attend a benefit dinner last Thursday in his honor at the Tito Puente's Restaurant in the Bronx, where he attended with his mother Doņa Clara. Three times world champion Wilfred Benitez retired with 53 wins,8 losses,1 draw with 31 knockouts.
