NY Rangers pick up Hispanic center, Scott Gomez

Written by www.latinosportslegends.com

July 2, 2007 -- New Jersey Devils center Scott Gomez signed a seven-year, $51.5 million deal with the rival New York Rangers today, leaving the only team he has played for in his NHL career. Gomez had 116 goals - but just 13 during the 2006-07 regular season - and 344 assists in seven seasons with the Devils.

"We haven't had any meaningful correspondence with Scott or his representative," Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello said today. "With the figures (being offered to Gomez) that I understand, it's not something we can afford. You can't just give money away. The well is not unlimited."

Gomez, 27, appeared in 72 games with the New Jersey Devils this past season, registering 13 goals and 47 assists for 60 points, along with a plus-seven rating and 42 penalty minutes. He led the club with 15 multiple-point games, including two three-point efforts, and was tied for second on the team with 47 assists.

He also led the Devils in faceoff percentage (52.2%), ranked first among team forwards in average icetime (18:55) and placed second on the club with a career-high 248 shots on goal. By collecting 60 points, Gomez surpassed the 50-point mark for the fifth time in six NHL seasons. In addition, Gomez led the Devils in postseason assists (10) and points (14). His 10 assists tied for sixth among all NHL players in the playoffs. He also tied for the team-lead with a plus-six rating in the postseason.

Gomez was the first Hispanic ever drafted by a NHL team. His father, Carlos Gomez, is a native of Mexico and his mother Dalia, is from Colombia
