Cotto defends his WBA welterweight title; wins decision over Mosley"Miguel is very strong. Not only is he a powerful puncher but he can box. He's a young lion on his way to greatness," Sugar Shane Mosley
Cotto (31-0, 25 KOs), of Caguas, Puerto Rico defended his title for the fourth time while Mosley, a four-times world champion, dropped to 44-5. Neither fighter scored a knock down but it was a slugfest for most of the 12 rounds. Cotto was cut by an inadvertent head butt in the final minute of the bout and bled from the corner of his right eye. Mosley had swelling under both eyes after 12 rounds of brawling. "It was a great fight," Mosley told reporters at the post-fight press conference. "Miguel is very strong. Not only is he a powerful puncher but he can box. He's a young lion on his way to greatness." Two judges scored the fight 115-13 and the third had it 116-113 for the champion. Cotto was bothered by Mosley's quick fists and work inside with the uppercuts, particularly in the second, fifth and 10th rounds. "He punches real hard," Cotto said. "I was hurt." The opening six rounds were sensational, with first the champion, then the challenger dominating. But neither fighter could pull ahead by much, in part because both were so determined. Mosley rocked Cotto in the seventh and ninth rounds, but the champion displayed his grit by coming back with some strong punches of his own late in the ninth. The 10th and 11th rounds were frenzied, with several toe-to-toe skirmishes and a series of uppercuts by Mosley. "We both did our best, we both gave it our all," Cotto said. Cotto, 27, now has his sight on the winner of the WBC welterweight title fight against champion Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton for a possible mega-fight next year.
