Mets make pitch for All-Star outfielder, Vladimir Guerrero January
9, 2004 -- The New York Mets have made an offer to All-Star outfielder, Vladimir Guerrero
in an effort to lure him to the big apple next season.
According to a baseball official, the Mets are made a three-year, $30-million pitch to Guerrero, but
has not gotten an response from the 27 year old slugger. The Baltimore Orioles,
who are also in pursuit of Guerrero, offered him a five-year, $65 million
dollar deal.
"We're letting the process play out," Orioles executive vice president Jim Beattie told the Baltimore Sun. "We're trying to move it along as fast as we can, understanding the other side has goals too."
Widely regarded as the best player on the free-agent market, Guerrero has received little interest. The Expos tried to retain him but lost negotiating rights when they did not offer him arbitration a month ago. Guerrero turned down a five-year offer from Montreal worth up to $75 million,
the best offer he has received to date.
Guerrero has stated that he wishes to stay in the National League
since he knows the pitching and prefers a city with a sizable Dominican population.
