April 6, 2004 -- Puerto Rican boxer, Miguel Angel Cotto has torn up his opponents lately and will try to do the same to Juan "El Pollo" Valenzuela when they fight on May 8th.

Cotto will defend his World Boxing Council International super lightweight title against Valenzuela (20-6, 9 KOs) on the undercard of the world featherweight title bout between Manny Pacquiao (38-2-1, 30 KOs) and World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation champ Juan Manuel Marquez (42-2, 33 KOs).

Valenzuela, a tough fighter from Mexico, scored an expressive second round knockout of Guillermo Valdes of the Dominican Republic in the second round before a packed house at the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles.

"I'm very focused on Cotto. It is going to be a difficult fight for both of us," said Valenzuela who is promoted by Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions." "This knockout is a message to Cotto. He does not intimidate me. If I train hard, I am ready for anyone."

In Cotto's last fight, he destroyed a much taller opponent in Victoriano Sosa

The young, super lightweight, Cotto (19-0, 16 knockouts) didn't waste time mounting his attack from the opening bell, catching Sosa with left hooks and landing devastating body shots.

Cotto knocked down Sosa three times in the bout when the referee Kenny Bayless stopped the fight in the fourth round.

"He's a really good fighter,'' Sosa said. "He's got a real good chance of being a world champion."
