Latino athletes honored at the first annual "Premios Fox Sports." Written

18, 2003 -- The inaugural "Premios Fox
Sports" awards show, kicked off in high fashion on Wednesday evening,
honoring the achievements of U.S. Hispanic and Latin American athletes.
Many Latin athletes and entertainers were invited to this prestigious
event and were welcomed with a red carpet at the new Radisson Hotel in
Miami, Florida.
Geraldo Rivera, a veteran correspondent and winner of over 170 journalism awards,
appeared with his wife Erica and was the Master of Ceremony, opening up
the awards show by introducing David Sternberg, General Manager of Fox Sports en Español and Fox Sports Latin America.
Others presenters include, Miss USA 2003, Susie Castillo; BMG recording
artist, Patricia Manterola; multi-talented entertainer, Roselyn Sánchez, whose film credits include Chasing
Papi, Rush Hour 2; Dominican tennis player, Mary Joe Fernandez and others.
The opening performance was by Mexican pop singer, Patricia Manterola who
sang her hit song, "Quedate Conmigo" with a set of dancers.
Puerto Rican singer, Carlos Ponce also performed and presented an award.
Leading the way winning two awards was Columbian Formula 1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya,
who was named Athlete of the Year and Latin American Driver
of the Year. Other athletes awarded that evening include, Chicago
White Sox pitcher, Esteban Loaiza, (Latin American Baseball Player of the
Year);
Boca Juniors forward, Carlos Alberto Tevez, (Latin
American Soccer Player of the Year); and Carlos Franco (Latin American Golfer of the
Year).
Special awards were also given in various categories, among them were
Mauricio Cienfuegos (Soccer) who received Humanitarian of the Year award;
Adrian Fernandez (Race Car Driver) for Outstanding Contribution to the
World of Motor Sports; golfer Vincente Fernandez and soccer star Carlos
Valderrama were honored for their outstanding careers and all-star
catcher, Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez was given a special award on
behalf of the Florida Marlins.
"I feel very proud to be receiving this award from Premios Fox
Sports", said Ivan Rodriguez during an interview with
Latinosportslegends.com. "Even though I will not be with the
Marlins next season, I'm glad to have planted a seed and brought a little
of myself here to bring a World Series victory for the second time to
Florida."
The show will be televised on Sunday, December 21st at 10:00 p.m. EST /
7:00 p.m. PST on Fox Sports en Español in the United States, and on Fox
Sports Latin America throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.
