Red Sox says A-Rod for Manny swap is dead

December 23, 2003 -- Texas Rangers owner Tom Hicks says Tuesday's deadline to try to trade shortshop Alex Rodriguez to Boston is final.

Boston is standing by its position that the proposed deal is dead.

So the player known as A-Rod may not become the first reigning MVP to switch teams after all.

The Red Sox and Rodriguez had tried to rework the deal so it would be acceptable to the players' union. Boston hoped to get A-Rod from the Texas Rangers for Manny Ramirez, in a swap of baseball's highest-paid players, whom are both of Dominican descent.

Rodriguez's contract is a 10-year, $252 million deal which has seven years and $179 million remaining. During negotiations last week, the players association rejected Boston's proposal, which the union said would cut $28 million to $30 million.

Last week's attempt at a trade with those contract changes fell through when the players association said the agreement could be restructured but not reduced.

A-Rod is considered one of the best players in baseball. He was named A.L. Most Valuable Player in 2003 and was also honored with his second consecutive Gold Glove Award.
