June 7, 2002 -- Former baseball slugger, Jose Canseco admitted in meetings with potential book publishers this week in New York that he used steroids while he was playing in the Major Leagues, his literary agent, Ronald Laitsch confirmed in a story in today's Wall Street Journal.

Canseco, who won the 1988 A.L MVP award, made the admission of using steroids during his 17 years in the Major Leagues after announcing his retirement from baseball and writing a soon to be released book on his life.

It's long been rumored that Canseco used steroids to bulk up and become one of baseball's most prolific home run hitters in the late 80's and 90's.

According to the article, Canseco said he used two varieties of steroids -- including pills and needle injections. He also told publishers he used steroids with, and helped obtain them for other players.

The Journal's story does not name these other players, but says that according to publishing insiders, Canseco in the book will admit for the first time his own extensive steroid use and will "name names" of other major leaguers who used the drug as well.

Including identifying some who are still actively playing in the Major Leagues right now.

When he announced his retirement last month, Canseco suggested that 85 percent of all major leaguers took steroids.

"Jose doesn't plan to pull any punches," Laitsch told The Journal. "This book will tell all."

Canseco announced his retirement May 14, leaving the game with 462 home runs, 1,407 RBI and a .266 batting average in 1,887 games with seven teams. He attended the Montreal Expos spring training camp in March, but was released and not signed by any other ball club.

Unlike in the NFL and the NBA, there are no rules in Major League Baseball forbidding the use of steroids.
