Camacho outworks Duran to win NBA super middleweight title.

July 15, 2001 -- In a bout titled "When Legends Collide," Hector Camacho Sr. won a unanimous decision against the great Roberto Duran to win the NBA super middleweight title (168 pounds).

It was a slow-paced fight in which both fighters did more holding and grabbing than throw punches.

Camacho Sr., who is known for his flashy outfits and dramatic entrances, came in wearing a red-white-and-blue Indian headdress and feathered cape. He was carried to the ring on a platform.

Duran took a more traditional entrance, walking to the ring in a velvet purple robe with gold trim.

Neither fighter staggered the other at any point, but Camacho landed solid blows with more consistency and was the busier of the two fighters. Duran tried hard, but came up short in this fight -- his right hands were too infrequent to make any significant dent to the slightly faster Camacho.

In the late rounds, the fans wanted a Duran miracle; ala Iran Barkley, but never got it. A slight Duran rally in rounds 6 and 7 was quickly ended by the southpaw jab of the Macho Man.

Both fighters lost points for illegal tactics in this fight. Camacho for a flagrant shoulder in round 6, while two consecutive low blows cost Duran a point in round 10th.

After the announcement of the scores, 114-112, 118-110 and 118-110 all in favor of Camacho, Duran stormed from the ring and declined to be interviewed.

Camacho stood and said after the bout, "Duran is a great man and a great friend. "The old man wore me out."

With the victory, Camacho, a five-time former champion, improved to 75-4 and said he will continue boxing.
