July 15, 2001 -- In a bout titled "When Legends Collide," Hector Camacho Sr. won a unanimous decision against the great Roberto Duran to win the NBA super middleweight title (168 pounds). It was a slow-paced fight in which both fighters did more holding and grabbing than throw punches. Camacho Sr., who is known for his flashy outfits and dramatic entrances, came in wearing a red-white-and-blue Indian headdress and feathered cape. He was carried to the ring on a platform. Duran took a more traditional entrance, walking to the ring in a velvet purple robe
with gold trim. In the late rounds, the fans wanted a Duran miracle; ala Iran Barkley, but never
got it. A slight Duran rally in rounds 6 and 7 was quickly ended by the southpaw jab of the Macho Man. After the announcement of the scores, 114-112, 118-110
and 118-110 all in favor of Camacho, Duran stormed from the ring and declined to be interviewed. With the victory, Camacho, a five-time former champion, improved to
75-4 and said he will continue boxing.
