Trinidad returns home to a warm welcome.

Puerto Rico welcomes Tito back home despite loss to Hopkins.

September 30, 2001 -- "To my Puerto Rican people, I still love them and I hope they still love me too" said Felix "Tito" Trinidad as he exited the arena in Madison Square Garden after suffering his first defeat to Bernard Hopkins on Saturday night.

When he arrived to Hiram Bithorn coliseum in Puerto Rico the next day to address the public and the Spanish press, Trinidad received a warm welcome from a huge crowd of people waiting for him to arrive from New York.

Over 8,000 fans filled the street and stadium waving Puerto Rican flags and cheering "Tito, Tito, Tito" and "revancha" (rematch). It was clear that in Puerto Rico, Trinidad is still seen as a hero and that touched his heart in a big way. "I am glad that all of you still love me and I feel the love and kindness of all my people and that is worth more than all the victories I have won in my career," said an emotional Trinidad fighting back the tears. "I still have a lot left in these legs, but I'm first going to take some time to rest and evaluate my career and future with my father."

"We thought (the Trinidad camp) we could have beaten Hopkins, but he came well prepared," Trinidad continued, "What he practiced came out well."

Papa Trinidad was next to address the public and acknowledged that Tito loss and Hopkins was the better man that night. "Hopkins is bigger and more stronger than Tito. He dominated. That was the main factor." Trinidad Sr. continued, "We have to know how to lose, just like we have won so many fights, we have to recognize when we lose."

Trinidad loss his first fight of his illustrious career to Bernard Hopkins at the finale of the middleweight championship series hosted in Madison Square Garden, NYC. Trinidad fought well in the first few rounds but was dominated by a stronger more aggressive Hopkins in the second half of the fight.

Trinidad had received a lot of punches and was knocked down in the 12th round. Trinidad barely got back up before the ten count and the fight was stopped when papa Trinidad threw in the towel to stop the fight.
