Big fiesta for Tito in Puerto Rico after victory over Joppy.

May 14, 2001 -- Puerto Rican boxing champion, Felix "Tito" Trinidad, (40-0, 32 KOs) returned home yesterday, welcomed by the governor and thousands of flag-waving fans who jammed Luis Muñoz Marín International ariport in Isla Verde to greet the new WBA middleweight champion.

Trinidad was all smiles when he saw the huge crowd, but was really surprised when he was welcomed by newly crowned Miss Universe, Denise Quiñones.

"I dedicate my victory to the mothers of Puerto Rico." Trinidad said, arriving on Mother's Day and accompanied by his parents.

Trinidad stopped William Joppy in the fifth round, Saturday night at Madison Square Garden to win the WBA middleweight title.

Gov. Sila Calderon welcomed him with Puerto Rico's other new champion, Denise Quinones. Quinones was crowed Miss Universe during Friday's pageant outside San Juan.Calderon declared today a holiday to honor Trinidad and Quinones.
