Terrorist attack in NYC KOs Middleweight Championship fight.

September 13, 2001 -- The Middleweight World Championship Series finale featuring Felix “Tito” Trinidad vs. Bernard “The Executioner” Hopkins originally scheduled for Saturday, 9/15 at Madison Square Garden has been postponed said event promoter Don King. 

Madison Square Garden also announced in a formal statement earlier today that it has cancelled or postponed all of this weekend’s events. 

“In deepest respect for all those affected by this tragedy, Madison Square Garden and Radio City Music Hall have cancelled or postponed all events through this Sunday. Events beyond Sunday will be assessed as appropriate,” said James L. Dolan, president and chief executive officer, Cablevision Systems Corporation and chairman, Madison Square Garden.

Don King, who is shocked at this horrific turn of events said, “This is no time to be having a fight.” “I am devastated and torn apart by these despicable acts, and my heart goes out to the victims of this senseless tragedy.”

King added: “We are working on a new date and hope to reschedule the fight soon. This is a sold-out fight, the best fight in boxing. I want to keep the fighters in training. September 29 is the date we are zeroing in on.

In the worst terrorist attack in U.S. history, two hijacked commercial jetliners crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City around 9 a.m. Tuesday 9/11, toppling both 110-story towers, where thousands of people had just arrived for work. 

Terrorist also drove a hijacked plane into the Pentagon which originally was intended to hit the White House.

The official death toll rose to 94, and 70 body parts also had been recovered from the smoldering wreckage of the buildings destroyed by hijacked planes. Some 4,763 people have been reported missing in the terrorism attack in NYC and 190 at the Pentagon.
