Sosa blocks three-way trade.
February
22, 2001 -- Dominican slugger, Sammy Sosa used his vetoing power
by killing a three-way trade which had him going to the Los Angeles
Dodgers.
The trade would have sent outfielder Gary Sheffield to New York, Sosa to
Los Angeles and Mets prospects to the Cubs.
But, a source within the Dodgers organization said that after the three teams agreed on players, Sosa used
his veto rights as a 10-and-5 man—a 10-year veteran with five years on the
same team—to squash the deal.
Cubs officials and Sosa's agent, Adam Katz, vehemently denied an agreement
on players had been reached. "That's not true," Katz said. "Nobody came to me. "Look, there was no trade
made."
The Mets are in need of a power-hitting outfielder and they figure with Sheffield and Mike Piazza hitting
back-to-back, could win it all for them.
The disgruntled Gary Sheffield, who has three years and an option left on his contract, recently told the Dodgers
that he would like to be traded to the Atlanta Braves or either New York team if Los Angeles did not sign him to
a lifetime contract extension. The Dodgers initially asked the Mets for either Mike Piazza or Edgardo Alfonzo in return, but were
turned down immediately.
Sheffield still remains high on the Mets wish list and Sosa remains in
the mix of trade rumors.
