Madison
Square Garden to host Middleweight Championship Series -- Hopkins vs.
Holmes, Trinidad vs. Joppy. March 14, 2001 -- Don King
Productions
has put together a middleweight
elimination series which will includes some of boxing's best fighters.
Bernard Hopkins vs. Keith Holmes will kick off the championship series on
April 14 (live on HBO), then IBF & WBA Puerto Rican champion, Felix Trinidad will battle
middleweight champion, William Joppy on May 12th (pay per view & closed
circuit).
All the participants have all agreed to participate in a unique tournament dubbed the
Middleweight World Championship Series to determine who is the best middleweight on earth.
Don King Productions will promote a total of three events, all staged at the
"World's Greatest Arena" Madison Square Garden.
“This is going to be big,” King said confidently. “The suspense and
drama of having the four best middleweights in the world fighting each other
to determine the undisputed middleweight champion is going to be a sight to
behold. Who will it be? Who will be the last man standing in September? I wouldn’t count any of them out—each of them could win it all.”
The Middleweight World Championship finale is scheduled to take place
this fall, and the winner will take home a specially commissioned trophy of a boxer many believe was the best middleweight ever—and the best pound-for-pound champion in boxing history—Sugar Ray Robinson.
Holmes vs. Hopkins tickets are priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25. Trinidad vs. Joppy tickets have been scaled at $750, $500, $300, $200,
$100 and $50.
