William Joppy signs to fight Trinidad -- now waits on Trinidad.

January 29, 2001 -- William Joppy (32-1-1) the WBA middleweight title holder has signed on the dotted line to fight Puerto Rican champion, Felix "Tito" Trinidad in May 2001.

Joppy, who signed the contract this past Friday, will be defending his title for the ninth time and believes he got what it takes to stop the undefeated, Puerto Rican warrior.

“I really do think my man will win,” said Stan Hoffman, one of Joppy's managers. “I think Joppy will have the natural weight advantage at 160lbs. William has campaigned all his career at 160lbs, so I think that will give him an advantage."

While Trinidad has to go up 6 pounds from his last weight class (Jr. Middleweight), Trinidad should have no problems making the weight.  In his last fight versus Vargas, Trinidad weighed-in a fraction of a pound overweight and had to run around Mandalay Bay to sweat it off. Papa Trinidad then admitted that "Tito" was having trouble maintaining and making 154. Felix Trinidad currently walks around 160-162.

Since Joppy has already signed the contract and submitted it via fax, they are now awaiting Trinidad and his camp to sign the contract,  “We signed the contract for Joppy to fight Felix Trinidad. However, I must stress that we have not had the contracts back yet. said Hoffman.

‘Tito" Trinidad has verbally agreed to the deal and is expected to sign later on this week.

There are two possible dated for the fight -- May 5 or May 12 and the fight will be aired on HBO and could possible be held at Madison Square Garden, NYC.

Felix "Tito" Trinidad, 39-0, is a four-time world champion winning belts in the welterweight and jr. middleweight division and is currently considered the best in boxing pound-for-pound.  Defeating Joppy will bring Trinidad another world title and will get him closer to the ultimate match of Trinidad versus Roy Jones Jr. later on at the end of the year.
