Oscar De La Hoya: "I'm the only man who can beat Felix Trinidad."

May 22, 2001 -- The golden boy, Oscar De La Hoya, who is still recognized as a great boxer, feels he has what it takes to beat Tito Trinidad and Shane Mosely.

In fact, De La Hoya says he's the only one who could beat those two guys.

"I feel in my heart that I'm the only one out there who can beat those guys (Trinidad and Mosely)," said De La Hoya. "That's in my plans. I don't think I can stop boxing until I beat them.

Many others have tried, but were unsuccessful. Trinidad has defeated the cream of the crop when it comes to the competition, among them three former Olympic gold medallist -- a feat which he is very proud of.

De La Hoya, 39-2, 28 KOs, also was defeated by Shane Mosely -- another boxer who is considered one of the best pound-for-pound.

“I want to avenge both my losses, hopefully this year while I still have the momentum." said De La Hoya. I want to fight Felix Trinidad first because he was the first to beat me, then “Sugar” Shane Mosley." "Maybe the dollar signs could bring Trinidad back down in weight to 154."

Slim chance of getting Trinidad back to 154, but De La Hoya will get another shot of becoming champion again when he meets Francisco Javier Castillejo of Spain on June 23rd for the WBC jr. middleweight championship. A win over Castillejo will put De La Hoya in the company of greatness -- Sugar Ray Leonard and Thomas Hearns are the only other fighters to have won titles in five different weight classes.

After that, De La Hoya will be looking towards fighting Fernando Vargas, then hopefully a rematch with Shane Mosely.
