"If I had Floyd Mayweather Sr. as my trainer back then, I will still be champion." Oscar De La Hoya.

March 14, 2001 -- Oscar De La Hoya who is training diligently for his upcoming fight on March 24th against Arturo Gatti said that he feels stronger and more confident than ever --and he gives all the credit to his new trainer - Floyd Mayweather Sr.

Floyd Mayweather Sr., a former welterweight boxer and father of super featherweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. has developed a solid relationship with De La Hoya and has taught him how to take his natural boxing skills to the limit.

"Until now, he had pretty much been doing things on his own and he did a great job on his own. Now I am teaching him what boxing is all about. If he did that good on his own, now
that he has a good trainer, you are going to see a new and improved Oscar De La Hoya," said Mayweather Sr.

Mayweather Sr. noticed several bad habits De La Hoya was getting into and worked with him to make changes, "I am trying to teach him now to keep his hands close to the body. I told him that if he keeps his hands close, fighters would not be able to land body shots from the side. I am also teaching him how to use the
whole ring, use a lot of jabs and practice everything. He has one of the best right hands in the business. The more De La Hoya fights, the more accurate he will be with what I am teaching him."

The Golden Boy (32-2 26 KOs) has won five world titles in four weight classes and has had a successful boxing career with only two blemishes on his boxing record - losses to Felix Trinidad and Shane Mosely.  The top two boxers pound-for-pound today.

Oscar De La Hoya is hungry to regain a world title and is also seeking revenge.  He wants a rematch with Trinidad badly since he was the first one to ruin his then undefeated record. "I want to fight Trinidad first because he
was my first loss and I would want to get him back first. Mosley would be next because he was my second loss. If don't retire afterwards, I might fight Vargas if I decide to give him a chance."
