March 28, 2001 -- The Anaheim Angels who signed Jose Canseco to a minor league contract as a free agent this winter sent the Cuban slugger packing on Wednesday.

The 36-year-old, Jose Canseco, was released by the Angels after hitting only .231 in spring training with no home runs.

Last year, Canseco played in 98 games with the Devil Rays and Yankees. With the Yankees, Canseco hit .243 with six home runs and 19 RBI in 37 games.

Canseco began the 2000 season with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and was released by them when the Yankees picked him up off waivers.

Canseco is 23rd on the all-time home run list with 446 and is #1 among Latino baseball players. Only Mark McGwire (554) and Barry Bonds (494) have more homers among active players.

Drafted by Oakland in the 15th round in June 1982, Canseco has a .266 lifetime average, with 1,140 runs scored, 446 home runs and 1,358 RBI in 1,811 games.
