Canseco promises cancer patient a homerun -- then hits two.

Surpasses Carl Yastrzemski on the all-time homerun list.

August 2, 2001 -- Cuban slugger of the Chicago White Sox, Jose Canseco met up with four young cancer patient on Cancer Survivors Night at Comiskey Park and told them "I hopefully can hit a couple home runs for you guys tonight." But I also said, "if I don't, watch batting practice because I'll probably hit a couple out in batting practice,"

After telling four cancer patients -- all under the age of 16 -- that he hoped to hit a home run for them, Canseco went out and homered in his first two at-bats Wednesday night as the Chicago White Sox beat the Kansas City Royals 7-6.

"Whether it was coincidental, whether it was luck or not, who knows? But like I said, I'm glad and happy for them it actually happened."

With two on and two outs in the first inning with KC starter Chris George (0-2) on the mound, he lofted an 0-2 pitch just over the left-field wall. Leftfielder, Dee Brown jumped for the ball, but it sailed over his head for a three-run homer that tied the game at 3.

Then, on his next at bat, he hit a two-run homer giving the White Sox a 5-3 lead. Canseco finished the night with 2 home runs with 5 RBI's and is batting .292.

Pretty impressive from a guy who was out of the major leagues a few months ago.

On Cancer Survivors Night, 450 patients and their families turned out at Comiskey Park. The children, two boys and two girls, were standing near the on-deck circle during batting practice, meeting the players and getting their autographs.

Jose Canseco has a lifetime average of .267 and ranks 21st, surpassing "Yaz" on the all-time home run list with 454 and is # 1 among career home runs by a Latino baseball player. He also ranks third among active players behind Mark McGwire and Barry Bonds.
