A-Rod breaks MLB home run record for shortstops.

Breaks 43 year old record once held by Ernie Banks.

September 24, 2001 -- After signing the most lucrative contract in sports with the Texas Rangers last winter, Alex "A-Rod" Rodriguez is having the best season of his young career.

Not only is he in the top ten in just about every offensive category, he is breaking records held by baseball greats and current Hall of Famers.

Last night against the Anaheim Angels, Alex Rodriguez hit his 48th home run breaking Ernie Banks' major league record for most home runs in a season by a shortstop. The legendary hall of famer, Ernie Banks had set the record with 47 in 1958 with playing with the Chicago Cubs.

With the game tied, 1-1, Rodriguez slugged the first pitch from Anaheim starter Ramon Ortiz (12-10) over the right-center field fence.

"I am very happy for him," Texas manager Jerry Narron said. "He's the best shortstop in the history of the game. I believe there isn't another player like him that has done as much as he has for his team. What he brings to the club is leadership and enthusiasm. He's a special guy and is a better man than he is a player."

Ernie Banks sent A-Rod this message, "Congratulations to A-Rod, I knew you could do it. You are a great man, an impressive baseball player, and a role model. I love the game of baseball, and I love to see players with heart and drive like yours who continue the spirit of the game.''

Rodriguez, 48th home run also tied the Rangers' franchise record for homers in a season, set by Frank Howard in 1969, when the team was the Washington Senators.

A-Rod is currently batting .323 with 48 home runs (tied for #1 in AL.) and 127 RBIs (3rd in AL).
